Clay Andrews is one of the most successful business men on the west coast. Having started his career as an Internet entrepreneur, Andrews is now the proprietor of Hype Manufacturing, one of the largest and most versatile machine shops in California. Most recently he has broadened his pallet to include Clay Andrews Racing, one of the rising stars of the NASCAR Busch Series.
Clay Andrews Racing is a team full of NASCAR veterans and one of the most promising drivers to come from the West Coast in recent memory. David Gilliland will drive the #84 Clay Andrews Racing Chevrolet in 2006 competing in major markets throughout the country. Andrews also called upon veteran crew chief Billy Wilburn to lead the team on and off the track.
Clay Andrews Racing was actually formed in 2005 to compete in the NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series. While visiting some Busch Series shops in search for some cars to purchase for his West Series team, Andrews noticed there was not much difference in preparing cars for the two series. It was then that he made the decision to go Busch Series racing. He tabbed Gilliland, who his team had competed against in the West Series, as his driver and the two ran their first Busch Series race together at Phoenix International Raceway on November 11, 2005.
Andrews is bucking the trend of newly formed Busch Series teams. Gilliland, a 30-year-old California native, was considered too old by today's standards. The team is building its own motors in a new motor shop in Murphy, NC, a feat unheard of for an infant team.
Andrews, however, is a winner. His business ventures have grown into premier world-wide companies. His successes in life nearly guarantee that Clay Andrews Racing will be one of the fastest growing teams in the Busch Series in 2006.
